By 1830, Santa Monica had become an independent city with its own government and economy. In 1853, it became part of California when it was admitted as a state into the United States. By 1860, most of what is now downtown Santa Monica had been developed including many fine homes for prominent Californians such as Commodore Perry and General George Armstrong Custer during their military careers at Camp Pendleton outside LA (now Westwood). The early years of California were filled with excitement about new arrivals who would change everything from farming to government but little happened until after 1848 when gold was discovered nearby at Sutter's Mill (later renamed Fort Tejon). Gold mining quickly became one of the biggest industries in Southern California because it could be done without leaving your home or having anything valuable taken away by Indians or bandits like other minerals did back then ! Many famous people lived near Sutter's Mill including Judge James Marshall who wrote an important law that helped establish justice in America !!! The discovery changed life completely for those living around here !!! It made money which allowed people to build really nice things like schools and churches etcetera! The townsfolk got together to form committees to extract all possible bitumen out of these hillsides so that vehicles could travel more easily over them (and they still do!). Santa Monica experienced rapid growth starting with only 6 residents in 1870 while buildings were being erected all around town ! Businesses included hotels, dry goods stores, banks and theaters !! From 1886 through 1920s there wasn't a summer season without some big event happening at one of our venues including movie premieres/events/festivals etc!!!!! We've seen some pretty amazing events happen here such as: wars; presidents; coronavirus pandemics; Florence Nightingale; Earthquake 1915 etc!!!!!!
