During World War II (1939-1945), many important members of the Hollywood movie industry worked or lived in Santa Monica including William Haines (director), Edgar Bergen (actor), Rudolph Valentino (starring role in “The Three Musketeers”) and Dashiell Hammett (writer/director). In 1951 Bob Hope moved from Chicago to become an American citizen and began working as a weatherman for KPBS radio station KTLA-TV Channel 4 where he continued making movies into his nineties! After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 25th 2005 many businesses were destroyed or damaged leaving downtownSanta Monica virtually uninhabitable! Despite this disaster most people continue to live and work within walking distance of both their homes and restaurants!
