The Santa Monica Mountains are a large, rugged mountain range that forms the eastern border of Los Angeles County. The Santa Monica Mountains are also known for their high-capacity Kitsilano and North Park reservoirs, which hold over 20 million gallons of water each. The history of the Kents Creek watershed begins with the construction of the first water filtration plant in Los Angeles in 1907. This plant was built to improve water quality and fix an existing deficiency in the hills east of downtown. It was not until 1935 that a second filtration plant was constructed on site, this time to treat larger quantities of sewage from north Hollywood and other areas in LA. By 1945, all three plants had been replaced by single-purpose pumps that drained into Kensington Creek. However, due to sanitary concerns and a changing population density, new pumping facilities were not built until 1978 and 1984 respectively. In 1988, when city officials decided to build new public restrooms near Koreatown (then called Highland Avenue), they considered using Kensington Creek as a source for potable water but found it too polluted for drinking purposes. Consequently, they decided to use nearby Westwood Reservoir instead. Kensington Creek has long been used primarily for irrigation systems; however, it is now being used as a local groundwater resource as well. A number of interesting phenomena have occurred along its course throughout its history: In 1951 two earthquakesoccurred within 2 miles of where Kensington Creek empties into Pacific Ocean; both were felt but no damage was done because there was no human interaction with either event immediate or long term

In Spanish this place was called Villa de las Nieves or Rancho de las Nieves because during their time (1848-1924) there were three large earthquakes that struck here: Márquez VIII., IX., XIV.—the largest ever recorded anywhere—caused great damage to buildings and people; total loss to crops amounted to $2 million; more than $8 million had been saved up for indemnification before San Francisco earthquake of 1906 destroyed everything but about seventy structures out of some 4,000 then standing; but no one could be reached except from Mexico City where they sent messengers by stagecoach with food parcels…. Accordingly we named our new town “Santo Domingo” after Our Lord’s Visit to this Country a few weeks ago…. At first it was only used for country namesakes connected with that particular parish until 1888 when large numbers started moving into our section (of Los Angeles) so that all local streets got given their current appellations….. In 1907–08 a law was passed making it an election year so that each community could get its own street name….. Thus Paseo Del Rey became Broadway, Vine Street became Avenue Montrose (after Governor Samuel Sanger), Third Street became Fairfax Avenue (after Mrs. Waddell Wilcox), Clifton Place became Clarendon Road after General John J.] Garfield who had become President Elect [1881]; Fifth Street finally got its present name——El Camino Real—-in honor of Our Lady’s Drive through these parts just past MacArthur Park…….. And now we are constantly listing all those Streets still unnamed or unpronounced long past their due date—-including Main Street which leads from Cliffside Drive down into Hollywood! So much for your innate Californian snobbery!
