The first gun sights in Santa Monica were a pair of cast-iron/steel sights located on the southeast corner of Second and Broadway. These sights were used by Private Rifleman William Halsey, 1st Battalion, California Infantry, who was stationed at Fort Point on Santa Monica Boulevard. On July 4, 1857, General James Buchanan issued Order No. 9 for therection of four embrasures to be placed in each tower of the new arsenal being constructed at Point Loma. In connection with this project General Buchanan ordered one hundred cast-iron/steel guns to be made and delivered to Fort Point. The guns were mounted in two towers and served as artillery until 1865 when they were removed from service and sold to private individuals. In 1875 an act entitled "An Act for the Encouragement of Commerce" was passed by the State Legislature which provided that any person who possessed or had possession of a weapon suitable for use as a gun sight could sell or lease it to another person without having to obtain a license from the County Commission. This law was repealed in 1886 but it is believed that some similar provisions still exist today. On November 15, 1892 Captain Augustus Prentice erected aGun Sight Store at 429 S 2nd Street within range of his newly built shooting ranges on Montecito Road across from Pacific Coast Highway (now Del Mar Drive). At this time there were no othergun sights located in Santa Monica apart from Captain Prentice's store which may have been used by others prior to its establishment including those established by Captains George Auerbach and John Jowers located at 419 S 2nd Street & Third Avenue between 1893 and 1897; these stores also functioned as rifle ranges until about 1916 when they became Ammunition Storage Yards for naval ordnance storage purposes only. On October 6, 1898 Major John Dimmick erected a Gun Sight Museum adjacent to his home on Third Avenue between First Street and Vine Street - this museum is now known as Johnny Appleseed Park - where he exhibited early American gun sights along with tools used in their construction including hammers, saws, screwsdriver etc.. He also demonstrations how various typesof iron grates could be attachedto either iron barrels or wrought iron frames making them more accurate with later models Of Guns From 1795 To1895 The first public display of modern firearms took place on December 3rd 1895 when Major John Dimmick displayed three pistols exhibited by Major Samuel Colt underwritten by William Jennings Bryan - later that year Bryan became United States Senator from Massachusetts On February 10th 1898 Lieutenant Colonel Wm Halsey donated six .22 caliber rifles (with paper stocks) dating back to 1861 t0 military surplus ammunition stored at Marine Barracks east side Of City Hall Plaza - these rifles came into use starting around 1902 during World War I Captain Augustus Prentice also donated three Model T shotguns dating back t0 1892 t0 military surplus ammunition stored at his ranch east side Of City Hall plaza - these weapons are now housedat Veteran's Memorial Building next door t0 Army Technical Services building
