The city was founded on December 25, 1915 by American forces during World War I as part of the San Diego-Yuma region. Santa Monica was incorporated in 1933 and became an independent city on February 14, 1972. The name " Santa Monica" comes from Spanish Mission Santa Margarita (now part of Downtown). The mission was completed in 1799 and named for Saint Monica de Porres who had visited the area earlier that year. In 1951, the City Council voted to change its name to "Santa Monica Beach." The history of SantaMonica stretches back centuries before it became a town or city. Indian groups frequented parts of what is now Santa Monica Beach from at least 1849 until white settlement began in earnest about 1830. By 1850 rancho grants had been given out for 2,000 acres (800 hectares) along present day Venice Boulevard and oceanfront property now known as portions of Santa Monica Boulevard and Marine Drive were purchased by Englishman John Copley beginning in 1851 as part of his Rancho Palos Verdes land grant scheme to encourage subdivision withinLos Angeles County limits. Many early settlers were former convicts transported to Los Angeles for expiring their sentences or those unable to work due to illness or injury.
