In the early 1800s, Santa Monica was a small town located in southern California. It was known for its wine country and its many hills. The area that is now Santa Monica was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1700s. The first Europeans to come to Santa Monica were Spanish Missionaries who arrived in 1769. They built a mission on the site of present-day LaBrea Avenue and named it San Gabriel de los Angeles. In 1821, Mexican nationals establishedZA Rancho Cañon del Norte east of present-day Downtown Santa Monica, which became part of Mexico after the U.S. acquired California during the Mexican War (1846-48). American traders and settlers began arriving in what is now Santa Monica in 1849, including Captain James Cook who landed on November 13th, 1847 at Point Mugu on Catalina Island and named it "Island of Vampires" because of all the blooded animals he saw there. He founded Rancho Los Palos Verdes on what is now Pacific Coast Highway 1 north of downtown Santa Monica Bayou near present-day Dodger Stadium and Mission Hospital. Captain Cook's land grant included what is now today's eastern border of Downtown Santa Monica between Vine Street (now Olympic Boulevard) and Western Ave., as well as most of modern day Beverly Hills northwest to Sepulveda Boulevard (now Wilshire Boulevard). During the years following Captain Cook's arrival, various other European investors also came to try their hand at ranching in this area which had been sparsely populated by Native Americans due to hostilities between them and Spain over control of California lands south of Ventura County line from missions such as Nuestra Señora De La Concepción up until 1844 when Mexico ceded southern California to United States under Treaty #8 treaty signed at Guadalupe Hidalgo City, Mexico on February 14th, 1848 becoming part of our nation immediately following its acquisition from France via war effort during President James K Polk's Executive Order 9Th through 11Th August 1850 during his term as president with Secretary Albert Sidney Johnston acting as American Minister Plenipotentiary for that purpose

This ordinance helped make SantaMonica one of the most diverse cities in America at that time. Today, there are more than 1 million people living in Santa Monica and its suburbs including Monrovia, El Monte (which includes parts of Downtown LA), Canoga Park (near UCLA), Walnut Creek (just north of Playa Vista), Industry Valley (in Westwood), Griffith Park (in East Pasadena), Downey (in North Hollywood) and Encinitas (northwest corner). These communities have come together to form a unified community which celebrates diversity through music festivals such as South By Southwest conferences; art galleries such as LACMA; fashion shows like Saks Fifth Avenue; literary events like Poetry Slams; food festivals such as Street Fair; open-air concerts like Coachella Festival; bike races like timed rides around Venice Beach
