On December 6, 1847, Santa Monica was incorporated as a city. The City of Santa Monica was named in honor of Spanish Santa Monica, which is near the present-day city. The area now including Santa Monica and Hollywood was part of Rancho Los Felices Mexican land grant given to José Antonio Yorba by Governor Pío Pico in 1836. In 1853, following completion of the California Trail and the discovery of gold in California, many Englishman and Mexicans came to explore the new country. One such person was William H. Beveridge who arrived in December 1853 from England with his brother John and their families. They started what would be known as “Beveridge” ranch which ran from Ventura Street through downtown to Fourth Street. On February 14, 1861, at 4:00 PM tensions between American soldiers stationed at Fort Eustis (just south of downtown) and Mexican troops led to a gunbattle that resulted in three Americans killed and five Mexican soldiers wounded; this event became known as the Battle of Santa Monica.(Los Angeles Times article) On March 12th 1861 Captain Robert Ewing ordered all military stores removed from Battery Park until further notice because he felt that they were being used by Mexico’s forces against Ulysses S Grant’s Army(November 15). This order caused an uproar among some Californians who saw it as an assault on their civil rights.(Los Angeles Times article) In 1865 when General Don Carlos Denzler's army moved into Orange County he left behind about 5500 men for occupation purposes only; these men were eventually called "The RegimentalSantaMonica" because they had all been raised in San Marino.(November 15 General Don Carlos Denzler Diary Entry) Fort Eustis remained garrisoned until 1870 when it surrendered to United StatesArmy under command Major General James Fenton(January 26 Order No 3). At this time there were over 6000 people living on or around present day Santa Monica Blvd., Malibu Dr(), Canoga Ave(), LaGuardia Way (), Brentwood Way() & Beverly Hills Rd(). By 1888 most residents had either left or been driven out by disease brought over by American soldiers during their fight for independence(New York Times Article)(October 3rd 1888).
