It was then converted into an art gallery which remains in use today. The Ammo Annex on Third Street was built in 1936 by Johnnie Cochran Jr.* It served as an ammo annex until 1984 when it became a restaurant*. This event is still commemorated by a small park near Mission Drive and Vine Avenue called Central Station Park after the original site where passenger trains stopped for passengers waiting to board other trains going into downtown Los Angeles or Pasadena
Santa Monica was founded on May 25, 1887 by Antonio Palomo. The area that is now Santa Monica had been inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans. In 1847, a group of American soldiers led by General John Cahuilla explored the area and discovered oil wells. In 1850, two brothers named David and Solomon Goldrick built a sawmill in what is now downtown Santa Monica. The mill became the first commercial establishment in Santa Monica.
