In 1821, the first European settlers in Santa Maria County were José Gomez and his family. The area that is now Santa Maria County was part of Rancho Rincon de la Vaca de Taos which was granted to José Gomez on December 12, 1794. In 1847, Don Isidro Francisco Garza founded a post office at what is now known as Rincon del Valle. In 1850, Pascual López donated land for a public park in what is today Rincon del Valle. On May 10, 1861, the county seat of Santa Maria County was moved from Rincon del Valle to present-daySanta Maria.
