Santa Maria is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 1,950 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera County metropolitan area. Santa Maria was founded in 1846 by James Irvine and his wife, Margarita Cisneros, on land granted to them by Governor Manuel F. De Jesus as part of Rancho San Luis Rey de Borrego. The first post office in Santa Maria was established in 1851. The town was incorporated on December 6, 1892. In 1916 the name of the town changed from Santa Maria to Spanish Mission Santa María de las Mercedes due to objections from Californians who felt thatMission San Francisco de Asís had been renamed for Queen Victoria (which it wasn't). There are several churches in Santa Maria including Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Church which built in 1907 and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe; Corpus Christi Catholic church built in 1912; and Holy Rosary Chapel which was completed in 1914. There are also several schools including Don Vicente School which serves grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade; Immaculate Conception School serving grades K-8th; Sacred Heart Catholic school serving grades 9-12; St Joseph's Seminary for Boys serving grades Pre-Vocation into Jesuitism and Post-Vocation into religious orders such as the Jesuits, Brothers, or Sisters) ; Blessed Sacrament Church (serving as an all ages Sunday morning nursery); Evangelical Lutheran/Church services are held at Don Miguel School every other weekdays from 7:00am until 12:30pm.; Saint John's Episcopal church with its own parish hall being completed in 1992 provides worship services for both Catholics and Protestants; Mount Carmel Baptist church offering worship services throughout the year;; Trinity Lutheran church having opened its doors back up after a fire destroyed it during remodeling work done inside during 2009 has become home to an active congregation since then offers worship services six days a week excluding holidays In addition there are numerous private businesses located within walking distance of many residents including banks, restaurants/cafes/bars etc., along with several large retailers like Macy's, Safeway etc., making this a shopping center type community with plenty of options if one wants something specific or wants to purchase something without having to go out again

Santa Maria, California was founded in 1849 by Mormon pioneers as the town of Morro Bay. The name comes from St. Mary's Cemetery in nearby San Francisco. The original mission was called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, but it burned down in 1853 and a new mission, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, was built. The post office at Santa Maria opened on November 15, 1850. When California became a state in 1850, Santa Maria became the seat of Sonoma County. By 1860, however, the population of Santa Maria had dwindled to about 100 people due to factors such as the Gold Rush and competition from larger towns in Sonoma County. In 1865, Don José Castro established a cattle ranch that included some of the earliest landowning families in SantaMaria Valley. In 1868-69 he built an adobe warehouse near what is now State Route 1 to house his stock and transported goods by horse and wagon overland to Market Street at Sonoma City for sale or shipment to San Francisco. This early community developed into what is today downtown SantaMaria with its well-preserved historic buildings including the Don José Castro Adobe Warehouse and several otheradobe structures dating back to this time including two churches (NuestraSeñor De La Concepcion Parish Church and Nueva Iglesia de las Américas Parish Church), a schoolhouse (Old School House), five Masonic lodges (Masonic Temple No 2 & 3 were built before 1800), four granges (grange homes date back to around 1840), three residences for Judge George Waring (Judge Waring House #1 & 2 were built c1860-1870) one residence for Commodore John Atherton(Atherton House #1 & 2 were both erected circa 1870) one residence for Drury Jardine(Jardine House #1 & 2 date back c1900) two residences also known as Drake’s Cellars Dwellings which are located east side of Main Street south of present day State Route 1 between 5th Street & 6th Street; these dwellings were probably constructed during 1880’s-1900’s when there was much activity around this area due to vineyards being planted throughout the valley starting about 1840 On October 24th 1886 James Brougham arrived on board USS Constitution anchored off shore at Point Reyes National Monument after reaching North America via ferry from Sausalito
In 1853, a group of men from Santa Maria founded the Mexican Mission Santa Barbara in that location. The first missionaries arrived with cannons and swords to convert the native people. A mission was built on the current site in 1858. In 1859, a new church was constructed and dedicated by Bishop Francisco Vallejo. The mission is now part of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in downtown Santa Maria.
