When the Santa Maria district was first settled in 1851, there were no settlements other than Mission San Francisco de Asís and the mission’s small garrison. The land grant for Rancho Rinconada was given to José Antonio Anaya on November 12, 1852 by Governor Pío Pico. The rancho included what is today the city of Santa Maria, as well as parts of present-day Monterey County and Riverside County. It was divided into two tracts: one to José María Balboa and one to Manuel Nieto. Manuel Nieto sold his share of the rancho in 1861 to Santiago Canzoneri. Canzoneri leased it back to José María Balboa in 1865. In 1868, Balboa sold his interest in the rancho to Juana del Carmen Carrillo y Soto, who married him that year. Carrillo began leasing it back to José María Balboa from 1889 until her death in 1903; at her death, she bequeathed it to her son José Fernando Carrillo y Soto (1892-1976). In 1906, Dolores Ibarruri became interested in purchasing the rancho from José Fernando Carrillo y Soto. She met with Josefina García de la Mata about buying it but García de la Mata refused because she did not want any part of a Mexican land grant that would go out of date; she wanted it attached to her father’s business empire founded by him after he immigrated from Mexico City in 1848. García de la Mata then approached Ramón Peña about selling her part of the rancho but Peña said he could not do so because he had already agreed with García de la Mata purchase price before dying a few months later from a heart attack at age 73 years old. After Peña’s death, Ramón Peña’s widow Licia Peña took possession of the property and offered it for sale again but this time decided against selling because she thought that it should stay within Mexican hands “as long as possible so that our people can still live here without fear that some Americans will come and take away our land or sell it at an low price so we can never enjoy its benefits again” (Carrillo 1961). This particular example shows how situation changed over time with successive owners/occupants; when an owner dies or leaves their property behind they are often passed down through family members before finally being offered for sale again - which happened multiple times with Dolores Ibarruri's attempt at purchasing)

Jedediah and David Barlow were two of the early settlers of Santa Maria and they had many adventures during their years there including being hanged by Indians while seeking revenge for a robbery they had carried out earlier that year! In 1865, when San Francisco was created as a city, Jedediah decided to move his family to become part of its new community. He built himself a home near what is now Market Street and David took over his father's business at nearby Folsom Mill which had been founded by his grandfather some fifty years earlier! Both men spent much time traveling throughout Northern California helping others find land grants and start new businesses! They eventually retired from their businesses in 1935 but continued to live on Willits Road until their death in 1957. Today, most people living in SantaMaria are descendants of those who first arrived here over seventy years ago! There are also some recent arrivals who have made significant contributions to the town - such as entrepreneur Donny Huffman who opened several successful stores here after arriving in 1978!

Santa Maria, California is a small town located in the Santa Maria Valley of San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 2,817 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Santa Maria were Mexican immigrants who arrived in 1857. A post office called "Nuestra Señora de la Concepción" was established on February 14, 1858, and served the area until 1861 when it was moved to its current location. The settlement changed its name to "SantaMaria" on December 12, 1861. A group of Californios named themselves the 'Doña Ana Rangers' and fought against Mexico in Alta California during the 1860s and 1870s. In 1872 they founded a mission here which became known as Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Convento de Dominguez y Galdiano (meaning Our Lady of Loreto convent). It functioned as a religious center for many years before being sold to the Catholic Church in 1904. In 1906 an outlying ranch used by ranchers for grazing land was purchased by Bishop Jaime Ortiz from José Vasconcelos heirs for $5 per acre (the price at that time). The new owner began development of what is now Santa Maria with help from local investors and workers under contract from Rancho Santa Margarita developer Antonio Salinas. initial plans called for a small town with schools, a grocery store, doctor's office, water well and other basic needs; but soon enough this plan evolved into what exists today with some additions over time such as new housing complexes or businesses being built near Interstate 5 or I-Parks

On January 3, 1870, the first post office opened in Santa Maria with Manuel Flores as the first mail carrier. The town became a part of San Francisco on February 14, 1871. In 1916, Santa Maria got its own water system. In 1969, it got its own airport
