Santa Maria is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Visalia Combined Statistical Area. In 1904, work began on building an airport which became known as Los Angeles International Airport (). Work continued until 1951 when most of the town center was destroyed by fire caused by an exploding gas pipeline that crossed under High Street just south of Main Street. reconstruction began immediately following this event which completed in 1957 adding much needed retail space within walking distance of both the airport and downtowns

In 1853, the first religious order to arrive in California arrived at Santa Maria with eighteen members: friars José Ortega and Agustín de la Cueva. The mission grew rapidly and by 1875 it had over a hundred residents. The following year, the Mexican government granted autonomy to Alta California and Santa Maria became part of the new municipality of Monterey. In 1905, after years of development work, the state legislature passed a resolution naming SantaMaria "the capital city of Alta California" and it was formally made an official city on December 3rd that year.
