The importance of ranching during much of its early history led to extensive development within walking distance of many local attractions such as Mission Ranch Park where you can find ruins from Mexican missions dating back to 1795; hills overlooking downtown full of wine cellars dating back to 18th century; dairy farms that produced milk for local consumption up until about 1920; open spaces such as Goat Canyon Preserve near downtown containing miles of hiking trails suitable for all levels from beginner through experienced hikers including several loops leading down into nearby wineries or stopping at breweries while exploring rural neighborhoods on your way out; easy access to Interstate 5 via US 101 making it easy to get around town without ever leaving your doorstep.; commercial activity increased after World War II with housing developments popping up along I-5 corridors connecting San Francisco with Los Angeles, Sacramento, Stockton and other eastern cities.; over time however becoming increasingly residential with more people living outsideOf town save for occasional events or special occasions., gradually losing some manufacturing jobs but still maintaining significant cultural assets like music concerts held at Mission Ranch Park annually during late summertime attracting thousands upon thousands Of visitors who enjoy views similar even if not identical to those enjoyed from Mission Hill just south across Highway 280
Santa Maria, California was founded in 1769 by Juan Jose Monterey and his wife Doña Ana de Borja. The first post office was established at Santa Maria in 1772. Spanish traders and explorers named the area El Dorado because of its rich gold mines. In 1821, Alvarado sold part of Santa Maria to Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena for $5,000. The name "SantaMaria" came from a Mission San Francisco de Asís built on this site in 1824. In 1868, the mission became known as Alcala del Rey (Royal Alcaldía). In 1906, the city of Santa Maria annexed parts of unincorporated Rancho Laguna Seca to its annexation limits. During World War II, the United States military built a airfield here called Camp Pendleton on land donated by General Douglas MacArthur. The airfield served as an artillery range and training ground for American units during World War II. The airfield was closed after the war and later became part of agricultural property; it is now used as a recreational area by locals and visitors. In 1957, Mayor José Gomez made Measures No. 1-A through No. 2-C dealing with housing development possible within the limits of present-day Santa Maria City Limits without annexing any other municipalities or lying within any other county or state boundaries; Measure No 3 would have provided for annexation into Santa Maria City Limits only if certain conditions were met including that crime rates drop by at least 50%. On November 8, 1957 voting results showed that 77% of voters favored annexing into SantaMaria City Limits only if certain conditions were met while 23% opposed annexation which meant that Measure No 3 failed to pass but did not lead to a formal rejection of annexation plans like Measure 1-A had done before it
