Santa Maria, California is a small town in central California that elevation ranges from sea level to over 6,000 feet. The name Santa Maria comes from the mission built there in 1847 and named for Saint Martha of Avila. The Mission was converted into a parish in 1852. In 1881, the parish became an independent city and still operates today as a city with its own government. The first European to visit Santa Maria was Mateo Pico on December 17, 1542 when he landed on shore near present-day Anza Borrego Springs. The next day he set out from San Diego with two other men, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and Francisco Eliza Gonzalez, for what would be the final leg of his journey across America. They returned safely to San Diego on February 14th of 1543 after exploring present-day Carmel and Monterey Counties along the way. On July 24th, 1602 Gaspar de Portolà passed through this area while on his way southward tofound Sonoma Valley. From then until 1800 no one had ever set foot hereabouts because it was too dangerous or difficult to explore without help from Europeans. On October 3rd of 1847 Father José Baca organized a religious congregation at what is now known as Our Lady's School which served as the first Catholic church in Santa Maria. It also served as the home of many selfless priests who dedicated their lives to helping others and teaching them about Christianity including Father José Baca himself who led services at our Lady's School for more than 50 years before his death in 1936 As missions went up throughout California they were often abandoned by their founders because they were not able to provide enough food or missionaries to maintain them effectively so settlers began arriving here instead which caused even more problems because there wasn't always someone available to take care of things like building churches or repairing roads etc.....In 1851 local citizen Manuel Nieto donated land east of downtown Santa Maria for a new parish which would become known as SantaMaria..Father José Baca soon became involved with this new Parish and started construction on both our Lady’s School (later renamed Our Lady’s College) and another church called Nuestra Señora de las Americas (Nuestra Señora’s Chapel). Construction finally completed in 1865 following much prayer and fasting by all involved including Bishop Fernando Guerra y Vargas who called it “the most beautiful edifice ever erected within these boundaries” .Father José Baca served as pastor until his retirement in 1929 after 39 years service here at “our beautiful old college...he loved nothing more than serving Christ inside His Church…He will be deeply missed” .This chapel is currently being used as an office building by our community college . Later that year Father Miguel Cabrera founded el Club Cristiano en honor de la Virgen del Carmen y los Tomanes (The Cristian Club in Memory of Our Lady OF THE CARMEL AND THE TOMANS) which has been providing social services here since 1959 In 1951 local Citizen Donato Zamarripa donated land off American Canyon Road north-west of town for another parish also known as SantaMaria but it never got off the ground due lack of support...In 1957 Antonio Gomez established el Instituto Nacional para la Prevención de Ilusiones (National Institute Against Illusions) heretofore known simply as "IIN" later renamed "La Salud". After several years' work Antonio Gomez moved his operations underground so that they could remain anonymous fearing persecution should their work come public attention ..In 1960 Antonio Gomez donated property adjoining La Salud Blvd north-west of town for use by our community college ..It was during Antonio Gomez' ownership that we began using facilities now occupied by La Salud Boulevard High School ..Sometime around 1969 Alberto Villarreal established el Centro Cultural Boliviano en Solidarity With EL PAÍS (The Center For Bolivia's Cultural Heritage In Solidarity With El País) heretofore known simply as "CECB" ..This center provides cultural programming such As classical music concerts, films & operas etc.... Later that same year Alberto Villarreal also donated land adjacent CECB along North Carolina Avenue eastsideof town for use as an emergency shelter if needed during natural disasters ....Elaborating further upon my topic I would like To say that over time various individuals have contributed countless hours - both volunteer & paid - making possible some great accomplishments such as: establishing libraries/ archives; creating streetscapes; developing parks; sponsoring art exhibits; conducting research into numerous subjects related thereto; writing articles & books about SantaMaria history etc....... So long story short: There are virtually unlimited amountsTo be thanked each & every oneof those listedabove..... The annexation created new problems for SantaMaria as it removed much-needed economic development from within its borders; however affordable housing continues to be available in Carlsbad today.

Santa Maria was founded by the Franciscan friars in 1769. The city's first post office opened in 1851. Santa Maria became a city in 1912 and is now part of the San Francisco Bay Area.
