Santa Maria was founded in 1769 by Mexico City-born Juan Bautista de Anza and his wife, María Luisa y Costilla. The first post office was established in 1857. The town's name comes from the indigenous word "santa" meaning "holy." The mission of Santa Maria was to convert the Native Americans living around it into converts to Christianity. The original church, which is still standing, was built in 1769 on what is now the corner of First Street and Ninth Street. It served as a parish until 1824 when it became an independent mission. In 1830, a second church was erected on Second Street south of Mission Road. A third church (now known as Cathedral) was built on Third Street east of Mission Road in 1859. In 1865, José Joaquín Herrera organized a group of Mexican American men who had been forced out of their homes during the Mexican War and were seeking new opportunities in California. He named this group the "Fuerzas Nacionales de Defensa Mexicana," or National Defense Forces for Mexican Americans. The men began construction of a school and other infrastructure in Santa Maria and formed militias to fight against Indian raids into southern California. On February 14, 1870, they faced off against 10 Indians at Mission San Fernando Rey de la Victoria near present-day downtown SantaMaria; the ensuing battle resulted in 8 Mexicans being killed and 3 wounded before Herrera's forces were able to drive the Indians back across Mission Creek into Mexico proper
