This caused some tension between Anglo Americans and Mexicans until 1870 when ranchers decided to give up their claims for fear that if they didn’t sell their holdings back to Mexico, they would be confiscated by United States authorities during Reconstruction following the Civil War. The last major conflict between America’s two races occurred here on Valentine’s Day 1865 when fifty men from Los Angeles made an abortive attack against Spanish settlers near present day downtown SantaMaria using rifles provided by Ulysses S Grant as part of his general pacification campaign throughout California

Santa Maria, California is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 9,693 at the 2010 census. Santa Maria has been inhabited by the Kumeyaay people for over two centuries and is known as "The Mission of the Blessed Virgin Mary". In 1853 Father José Miguel Ortega founded the mission on land given to him by Rancho San José de la Purísima Concepción y Gómez. The first religious settlers were Franciscans from nearby Monterey Bay who arrived in 1854. In 1865 construction began on a larger mission with an adobe chapel and little else. The original name of the settlement was Zuni Pueblo or "The Mission of Our Lady of Zuni" because it was near where National Park headquarters are now located. A Mexican-American war veteran named Manuel Nieto built a cabin in what is now downtown Santa Maria about 1870. He became one of history's first Anglo citizens when he donated land to build a school and store in downtown Santa Maria in 1875. A post office called "Nieto's Store" opened in 1880 and remained open until 1957; both buildings still stand today on Main Street NE between First Avenue NE and Broadway NE (now University Boulevard). After years of political wrangling over control of the small town, Mexican War veteran Francisco Lopez signed an agreement giving his land adjacent to that controlled by Anglo residents to Santa Maria Fathers on November 12, 1886 as part of a peace treaty ending that war. The new community had its beginnings as French Catholic missionaries established their physical presence there after having withdrawn from missions throughout California due to persecution during the Mexican–American War era (1846-1848). The founders initially intended for San Miguelito Creek—a tributary off Big Sur’s eastern coast—to be their communal water supply but foundered upon disagreements about who would own and maintain access to it; eventually shares were sold back and forth among members until it came into personal hands of founder Juan Pablo Garza de la Cruz y Uribe circa 1888 when he also bought title deeds for all of Big Sur watershed area including present-day Santa Barbara County including most notably Ranchería del Colchuelo which lies within present day Ventura County borders: thus becoming one man’s private domain while others shared common features such as governance by elected officials, markets & schools etc., thus setting up what we know today as “the Garza decision” ruling that individuals are not responsible for environmental degradation regardless if they happen inside or outside their property boundaries which has led many communities aroundCalifornia≠to try implementing similar policies/governance structures whereby externalities are taken into account
On December 15, 1847, the first post office in Santa Maria was established. It was known as Pueblo de la Santa Maria. The name changed to Santa Maria on May 10, 1850. In 1857, the town had a population of 266 residents and it adopted a city charter on November 3rd. The first mayor was Francisco Javier Martinez and the first councilmember José Gomez. On October 25th of that year, the new cathedral (dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe) was dedicated and during its construction a fire destroyed most of the town center including the old courthouse which served as municipal building until 1911 when it became part of the new university campus
