In the early 1800s, Santa Maria was a small town located in the center of California. On October 25, 1851, four men were arrested and tried for violating state law by possessing a revolver without a license. The men were found guilty and sentenced to 10 days in jail each. The defendants appealed their convictions to the California Supreme Court, which upheld their sentence but reversed the lower court’s finding that they had not possessed the weapon for purpose of intimidation or violence. The high court reasoned that because handguns were still new technology at the time, it was impossible to know with certainty whether anyone had actually intended to use them in such an manner. In other words, even if someone did possess a handgun for nefarious purposes, he could not be sure that he would actually use it in this way- thus meeting the definition of an “involuntary user” under state law. This ruling effectively ended gun ownership within Santa Maria- though some residents continued to own firearms outside of state regulations until after World War II. Firearms possession remained illegal throughout most of California until 1994 when Proposition 187 passed through voter referendum and made firearm ownership legal statewide

In 1944 Santa Maria was chosen as the site for the first official American permanent military installation in California during World War II when Generalissimo MacArthur called upon U.S.-Mexican forces to help quell Native American uprisings across Central America. The war also saw heavy bombing raids against SantaMaria which left many properties damaged or destroyed including many homes that still stand today such as frame No 3104 on Dogpatch Avenue which stood until 1951 when it caught fire from a faulty gas line and was completely destroyed

The first permanent European settlement in Santa Maria, California was made by the Spanish in 1769. The mission of Santa Maria de la Cruz was founded on December 12, 1769 and completed two years later. The original mission building still stands today, and is a national historical landmark. In 1821, the Mexican government designated Santa Maria as part of the province of Monterey and transferred jurisdiction over it to Santiago del Monte. In 1847, after Mexico achieved independence from Spain, the Monterey Province became part of the new Mexican Republic. As a result, SantaMaria became part of Californias Francisco Alvarado County and lost its status as a Mission Parish. The lastmission in Angels Camp closed in 1959; however, it has been preserved as an active church property with tours available for visitors.
