Santa Maria, California is an incorporated city in the U.S. state of California and part of the San Francisco Bay Area. As of 2019, the city had a population of 129,827. The name "Santa Maria" was given by Father Junípero Serra, who named it after the Immaculate Conception, one of his many conversions from Judaism to Christianity. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Maria were Spanish sailors on their way back from visits to Asia Minor in 1542. They called it Islas de Santa María, but no one knows why they decided to change it to SantaMaria (or Santsamaria). So Spaniards called this island Isla de las Nieves or Isla del Pueblo because they couldn't find any people there and only found animal life (mostly seals). In 1778 Gaspar de Portolà charted a route between Monterey Bay and Catalina Island as part of his survey for a new southern route to India overland. He called it la ruta del Recodo (the Route of Recovery). A year later Portolà's group sailed past Cape Horn and into Baja California Peninsula on their return trip northward before reaching Monterey Bay on July 18, 1779. There they discovered Rancho Del Norte - still unoccupied -2 miles long and wide open beyond all other ranchos within 10 leagues or so east of them on Anacapa Island opposite Point Lobos; they named this track Rota del Rey because its discovery represented the recovery from accidents at sea following Magellan's last journey across that ocean more than two centuries earlier! In 1836, the U.S. government established military post at Santa Maria to prevent Mexican raiders from raiding American settlements along the southern U.S.–Mexico border. The town reached its peak population in 1840 with 1,500 residents and 100 buildings. However, following an economic downturn in 1841-1842, Santa Maria’s population dropped to 600 inhabitants by 1850 due to many settlers moving away for new opportunities in California or elsewhere in America. The first European to visit Santa Maria was a Spanish sailor named Juan Rodríguez de Menchaca who sailed on the Castilian ship "Hercules" in 1542. He encountered and took possession of the island on December 11, 1542. The first European to settle in Santa Maria was Pedro Fonseca who built a small cabin on the island in 1611. In 1776, General José Manuel Arguelles ordered the construction of a wharf on the islet for use by ships docking at San Francisco Bay. The wharf became known as Fort Point because it was located near one of the most important points in Maritime California. In 1821, Commodore John D'Eyncourt commissioned Captain John Brossy to survey and map all of Santa Maria Island from its headland to its cape. This maps are now at the Humboldt-Salinas State Historic Park Museum in Salinas. On February 1, 1847, during Mexican–American War (1846-48), Ulysses S. Grant landed his army at Coyote Hill about three miles south of present day Fort Point and burned everything he found on Santa Maria including some 250 buildings and stores belonging respectively to Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Governor López de Velasco y Canales; Andrés Gálvez y Vargas; Joaquínhn Herrera Pacheco; José Antonio Carrillo Magee; Augusto Cámpora y Mina with their families members, effects etcetera all situated upon or within an area measuring not more than two thousand acres exclusive ofbuildings ever since removed by order of this general commanding under pain of summary punishment which would include transportation back to Mexico without any return trip whatever may be their intentions or designs thereupon
