Santa Maria is a small town located in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and is adjacent to Menlo Park. The first Europeans to visit Santa Maria were Spanish missionaries who founded Mission Santa María de la Concepción in 1769. The mission became a secular jurisdiction under Mexican rule in 1821, and it was incorporated as a city by an act of Congress in 1882. After establishment of Californio control over Alta California, Santa Maria fell within Mexican territory and its government was controlled by Jesuits until 1892 when they sold their holdings to the United States government for $2 million. In 1906, following passage of the Morrill Act which repealed most Ecclesiastical Districts in California, all Catholic churches were required to become state-chartered organizations or face receivership. In 1917, after World War I ended with Germany's defeat, the United States acquired Alta California from Mexico and began administering it as part of what is now known as Southern California. As part of this management change, Alta California was divided into several districts including Paso Robles District and Monterey District which included portions of Santa Maria Municipality including portions now within Menlo Park limits. On December 1st 1915 all religious orders affiliated with AltaCalifornia were placed under authority of the newly created State Board for Religious Regulation under Governor John Prentice Hite (1915-1917). Santa Maria, California is a small town located in the San Andreas Fault Zone in southern Santa Barbara County. The population was 3,898 as of 2010 and it is the most populous municipality within the boundaries of Ventura County. The community was founded by Manuel Nieto on November 25, 1847 as a rancho named Rancho Santa Margarita. It became a full-fledged village on May 2, 1868 when its first post office opened. The name "Santa Margarita" comes from Spanish for "holy Mary." The original settlers were farmers who grew citrus fruits and sold them from their homes on Main Street. By 1880, the town had developed into an agricultural center with over 100 businesses and 1,000 residents. Mines soon began to be developed in the area including Pico de la Hoya which gave rise to nickname "The Gold Coast." In 1906, construction began on what would become known as Central Park which served as a local park until 1924 when it was incorporated into neighboring Agoura Hills. During World War II Santa Maria became one of the largest American military training sites with more than 12 miles of dirt roads used for bombing raids and other exercises. More recently, it has been home to many large companies including Lucent Technologies and Boeing Services Company headquarters. In recent years there has been attention given to revitalizing downtown Santa Maria with projects such as developing new public transportation options or creating mixed-income housing developments that could boon development in adjacent neighborhoods

It served as a religious center for San Miguel Apostolic Church, which is now known as the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception.
