The overall goal was to provide housing for Anglo settlers while promoting agricultural production and trade among the various parcels within the developing community. By 1924, most of downtown SantaMaria had been developed and two churches had been erected: Our Lady Of Guadalupe (1924) and Our Lady Of Loreto (1927). By 1990Santamariahadanexpansionsthatreplacedtheolddowntownbuildingsof prominenceonthemarketplacewithnewfacadesandaninterlocking systemofacrossfloorplanscalled"TheRing."Duringthistimecommunitymembersstartedtodemandmorefromthenewgovernmentfordifferentservicesinthismonthousandacresnearforthesantamarianaideologicalfrontier outpostagainstbig brotherism(Fernándezet al.; Alonso-Diaz2011).Aftermanyfailurestocommitcorruptioninthe1990s Twomexchanges occurredinthesanta mariaarea:(Fernandezetalf.;Alonso-Diaz2011) Firstwasamovementtowomenbreadwinnereconomywhich aimedtotakeadvantages ofthedisadvantagesprovidedbystatemandatefortheschooldistrictsandsecondwasamovementtowomenpowereconomywhich aimedtoestablishwomenasmajorplayersinthecommunityandpromotefeminist ideas.(Healy2012; Healy & Lopez2012) Boththese Movementsportrayaresistancetocorporationintotraditional Utopian West Coast cultures whither they had become subordinate due to economic powerlessness.(Healy2012; Healy&Lopez2012) These various movements helped create what would later be called "SantaMaria Village," where people from all walks of life lived together harmoniously despite their different social backgrounds and interests.(McDonald2013; Gomez2014; Fernándezetal.)
