The original Catholic church was built with brick and mortar but fell into disrepair over time; it was replaced in 1931 with a much more modern structure designed by architect John LarrabeeJohnson which still stands today. The first permanent Mexican population arrived in 1821 when Vicente Guerrero decided to move his army from Monterey to Mission San Antonio de Padua Dueñas (now part of Santa Barbara). In 1824, father Lopez added an auxiliary mission, Nuestra Senora de los Angeles de la Paz, which served as a parish church for the surrounding region. In 1830, Fernando Soriano y Valdés purchased Rancho Santa Margarita from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $4,000. Soriano had come to Monterey County with intentions of making it his new home and found that he needed both land and water resources to do so. He started building what would become known as Soriano Park on the east side of the peninsula near today's downtown Santa Maria. In 1865, local miners discovered gold at Siskiyou Heights south of present-day downtown Santa Maria; this led to increased settlement around Siskiyou Heights and adjacent hills within two years. After a few years of exploration successful attempts were made to find silver and gold veins but no riches were foundable upon examination or assay conducted at Siskiyou Heights; Thus an Act was passed authorizing Don Carlos Ortiz Zambrano—the successor to Captain Manuel Nieto—to redeem all claims against Mexico City Government Bonds amounting to $5 million payable at Sacramento within three months after receipt thereof from said Mining Company owners Messrs Charles Goodrich & Co., etc., dated May 1st Aged 42 years old inclusive.) When news reached Governor Burnett that prospects for finding silver mines about twenty miles ( thirty kilometers) northeast lay open without any interruption at all he immediately dispatched Lieutenants Jellinek & Wesson with their parties under Captains Fagin’s command up that roadstead where they prospected incessantly during several weeks occupying every rich lode they discovered only one brick having been produced outofa hundred taken thereat.— thenceforward all these operations were directed by Lieutenants Jellinek & Wesson." The first Europeans to arrive in Santa Maria were the Jesuits, who arrived in 1769. The mission was founded by Father Francisco de Anza and was named after Saint Mary of the Assumption. The first Catholic church in Santa Maria was built in 1824. In 1853, a school and convent were established here and the city became known as "el puerto de las Madejas" (the port of Madeja). In 1870, a large cotton plantation was developed by José Gomez y Mendoza and the city became known as "la ciudad con azúcar" (the city with sugar). In 1901, the California state legislature created a new district called Santa Catalina County within Santa Maria District. This gaveSanta Maria City its own government which lasted until 1915 when it merged into one of the numerous municipalities that constituted San Diego County. In 1916, during World War I, portions of southern San Diego County were annexed into Imperial County while northern San Diego County remained under federal control. As a result, much of what is now SantaMaria City was within Imperial County including most of its Cotton Mill District which eventually fell to ranching operations after World War II ended. During the 1960s-1970s there were several redevelopment projects taking place such as Paseo del Norte Shopping Center on State Route 91 between University Avenue and Pacific Boulevard which included high-rise apartments and shopping mall concept called Santana Row; Aultman Plaza just north of University Avenue on Aultman Road included office buildings and arterial shops; Moreno Valley Mall near Interstate 5 outside town took over an old Sears department store site; across I-5 from Moreno Valley Mall was another mall - El Camino Real - that also contained office buildings but no retail stores or restaurants when it closed down in 1991 due to economic concerns about growth around I-5 corridor.;
