The Santa Maria community is located in the heart of California's wine country. The area around Santa Maria was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1700s. By 1805, the mission had been founded and named San Miguel de Allende after Padre José Miguel Gómez, a Spanish missionary who had visited the area earlier that year. In 1821, the Mexican state of Baja California was created and SantaMaria became part of it. The Mission continued to operate until 1796 when Father Francisco de la Cruz y Costilla replaced Father Miguel Gómez as head priest of San Miguel de Allende. From then until 1800, there were also three other priests at San Miguel: Vicente Mariscal y Ulloa (1768-1828), José Cámpora (1797-1827) and Agustín Fernández de Oviedo (1800-1851). In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and all missions fell under jurisdiction of Baja California. However, since most of the Native American residents in this region were already converted to Christianity and many wanted to stay Christian, some missionaries decided to keep working at their Missions even after they left Mexico. A few years later on September 6, 1825,Father José Gomez died at age 82 while serving as an ordained priest at his Mission; his successor was Father Manuel Garrido Ortiz y Moscoso who served until 1830 when he was succeeded by Father Antonio Lomas Canoso. On October 8thof that year additional land southeast of present day Santa Maria was annexed to Baja California as part of a treaty resulted from negotiations between Mexico City and Los Angeles over succession for Mission lands in Southern California following Francisco Garza's death in 1824. At this time about 2/3rds or 1 million people lived within Mexican territory east of Vizcaya which included parts now including Fresno County, Kern County and portions now including Santa Maria countyseat
The first European to see Santa Maria was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. On July 10, 1769, Father José Gomez y Gómez arrived at the island of Isla de Santa Maria and anchored his ship off the coast of what is nowSanta Maria County. He named it San Miguel de Allende after one of his parishioners, Miguel Allende. On November 13, 1846, General Antonio Lomas fought a pitched battle against Native Americans near present-day Morro Bay before finally succumbing to disease and death on October 3, 1847. This event is known as the Battle of Morro Bay. The town began to form from land that lay east of the bay and west of Mission San Francisco de Asís soon thereafter. In 1868 a group led by rancher Manuel Nieto founded another small settlement on an uninhabited island just offshore frompresent-day Santa Maria County called Rancho Rinconada del Norte. It quickly grew into a thriving community with many families making their home there during the early years of its existence. In 1915 Rinconada was renamed Los Olivos after President Frank Knox who donated land for the village in recognition of its importance in California’s history
