Santa Maria, California is a small town in the Santa Cruz Mountains of central California. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. The name "Santa Maria" is Spanish for "Saint Mary." The community is located on State Route 1, about 15 miles (24 km) north of San Francisco and 18 miles (29 km) south of Los Angeles. The townsite was first settled in 1853 by brothers Elias and George Snively. In 1861 they purchased land from Don Pedro Alvarado who had been granted the Rancho Rinconada by Mexican President Fillmore. growth in the area began with construction of a Union Pacific Railroad line through the mountains, which led to increased trade and travel through the area. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in what would become Santa Maria. In 1902, local entrepreneur Cesar Chavez organized a drive to collect donations for his newly founded environmental organization People's Farm. After several weeks of soliciting donations from people throughout Santa Maria, Chavez obtained 5 barrels of oil from an rancher named John Sutter on January 6th, 1902. With this donation, Chavez created history as the first person to give away free oil to someone other than an energy company

Santa Maria, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. Situated on the banks of the Sacramento River, it was founded by ranchers in 1851 as an agricultural community called Westover. The name change to Santa Maria when it became part of the United States in 1850. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in what is now Santa Maria were Spanish Franciscans who arrived from Mission San Diego de Alcalá and established a mission there in 1777-78. In 1821, their successors, the Mexican government set aside land east of Bakersfield for Rancho Alta California and awarded it to James Pico and others for ranching operations that would include sheep, cattle, horses and other animals. Some 10 times over the next few years various claimants claimed sections of this vast acreage; until finally it became national land under Ulysses S. Grant’s proclamation on February 14th, 1872 which offered allottees “an opportunity for cultivation or occupation according to their own choice” including “the whites only” – meaning Anglo-Americans! It soon became apparent that those Anglo- Americans who chose to farm had to do so within limits created by Native American reservations adjacent to their property boundaries; these limits still exist today! Not surprisingly then, little progress was made during those early days when most people did not know or could not afford irrigation systems! In 1875 Henry Cisneros took possession of Rancho Alta California from Mexico after successfully muscles his way into Congress as a DemocratRepresentative from Californio (now Riverside County) following three years of agitation led by José Nieto whose father had been born in nearby Eastpointe on October 25th,, 1788. After seven months occupancy he sold out to Don Carlos Arguello y Ocampo for $5 million plus title interest free from any Indian holdings whatsoever! This event marks one important turning point in history as Arguello represented what we now call Contra Costa County while José Nieto controlled central valley gold fields providing vital transportation links essential for Gold Rush exploration with shipments arriving at Yuba City via Anza Pass landing at Point Reyes near Sausalito before proceeding upriver through Orinda and Carquinez Strait along tidal mudflats reaching Half Moon Bay where they were offloaded onto ships anchored offshore before continuing northward across Soquel Creek Bridge Landing opposite Haight Ashbury before disembarking at Redwood Beach past Cellulose Cliff where General Winfield Scott Segundo built his famous Mission Dolores Adobe circa 1800! A number of adobe buildings still remain throughout much of Contra Costa County although many have been converted into homes dating back to around 1930!! In 1906 Alcalde Francisco Ramos appointed George Wickersham our first postmaster with mail service starting November 1st preceding Our Lady Of Guadalupe Cathedral serving until 1918 when World War I disrupted mail services leaving us without an effective postal system until 1951!! Prior thereto our telephone service commenced June 6th 1900 with wired connections available only between residences !! With rapid growth during World War II such necessities as water delivery, firefighting/rescue services etc.,Norman Landon initiated major local improvements resulting in present day downtown business district being developed ! It should be noted that despite having no streetlights until 1915 when newly installed electric lights were turned on annually beginning September 15th!, downtown streets are generally brightly lit year round thanks largely to city light program started 1962 !! All told even though large portions of inland Kern County remained dark much longer due primarilyto lack thereof either infrastructure or resident demand some 55%of all school district students attend lighted schools while barely 20%of rural students do so!!!!! Despite being one smallest county within state geographically located entirely within Southern Nevada bordering Arizona (!), its citizens have always taken pride in their preparedness & self reliance evidenced by numerous special events & festivals includingmany Carnival related celebrations both big & small every year since 1912 thru 2019 inclusive!!! Although often unappreciated outside our increasingly globalized society many folks here truly enjoy participating willingly & responsibly therein making SantaMariaCities #1 placeFORcommunity involvement !!
