Santa Maria, California is a city in San Diego County, California, located on the southern coast of the county. It is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 59,521 at the 2010 census. Santa Maria's history goes back to 1827 when it was founded as an agricultural community by Spanish settlers and Missionaries under Mexican rule. The name "Santa Maria" means " Holy Mary." The first post office in Santa Maria opened in 1827 and was called Rancho del Rey de la Calle. A year later, it changed its name to Rancho Grande de la Pascua y el Rinconada (later renamed Rancho Nuevo de las Palmas). In 1852, the town incorporated and hired John Sutter as its first mayor. In 1863, a fire destroyed most of downtown SantaMaria but didn't damage any buildings beyond that. In 1865, captain James Hutton donated land for what would become Alhambra Park which now includes most of downtown SantaMaria including the State Capitol building and a portion of Mission Bayou. On January 1st 1861 Governor Goodwin Proctor granted land east of present day US route 101 to three pioneers who had petitioned him for access to that land: Oscar Lewisohn (1822-1881), Hiram Morse (1824-1900) and Augustus Woodward (1828-1912). They named their new settlement after Our Lady of Guadalupe – La GUADALUPE CALIFORNIA (See also: History Of East Los Angeles)). On February 9th 1861 they filed their plat with the County Clerk’s Office under title “ Donation For Public Land Grant No 20” (). The grant consisted of 640 acres south/southwest of where Broadway meets Pacific Coast Highway including everything east or north thereof from present day US Route 101 & west thereof along Long Beach Boulevard (& present day Harbor Drive) into Yorba Linda Creek between Hereford Road & Anacapa Peninsula Boulevard included.) After years of civil unrest over lack of water rights near their proposed site some modifications were made to this grant in 1872 when Benjamin Banneker became interested in purchasing property further north along US 101 just east off Hereford Road but never did so due to opposition from local landowners; these changes allowed him more acreage close unto his original donation than he originally received (). In 1886 construction began on what would become our current courthouse - one block southwest of Main Street across from Union Station which served as both courthouse and jail until 1963 when it moved uptown to old City Hall on Flower Street next door to City College District #2.) After years struggles with funding problems various attempts were made over the ensuing decades by various leaders within city government culminating with Measure M being placed on November 6th 1990 via initiative vote by City Councilmember Robb Walsh which provided $8 million towards development within miles long arterial streets such as First AvenueAngeles Freeway & Harbor Drive) Today much effort continues focused upon beautification efforts while making significant progress has been made towards renovating old city hall)
