In 1875, construction began on what is now historic Main Street which would eventually become known as "old"SantaMaria Avenue. This street served as the main thoroughfare through downtown Santa Maria for over 100 years and today remains essentially unchanged compared to its original form. During World War II, many residents enlisted in military service and some moved up into larger towns such as Gilroy or San Jose but most stayed behind inSantaMaria thanks to its close proximity to both military installations and other major cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area

A sawmill and gristmill were built in the town in 1850. In 1855, a school was established and a flour mill followed three years later. The first churches were built in Santa Maria in 1860 and 1861. A Baptist church was also built that year. A railroad station was constructed near Santa Maria in 1865, and the population increased rapidly over the next few decades as businesses sprang up to serve residents of the small community. By 1900,SantaMaria had a population of 1,500 people and it had become an agricultural center with fruit orchards, corn cribs, dairy farms, and pork production being among its primary industries. However, by 1910 only 350 people lived within the limits of Santa Maria proper while 2,000+ lived within unincorporated areas surrounding it. By 1920 only 100 people remained living within downtown Santa Maria while 3,000+ resided outside its boundaries. However even during these difficult times there were some brave souls who fought for their community as well as continue to produce foodstuffs such as apples from trees on Main Street or flowers at local gardens: Mrs Jane Hebert ran a grocery store on State Route 126 until her death in 1951; Joe Kroeger raised chickens until he became ill; Mrs Jennie Thomas ran a bakery until her death; Mr Charles McCullough did odd jobs for various families before opening his own business catered to truckers coming through town;and many others like these who shared their stories of hard work and perseverance so that what little success they did achieve would not be taken for granted but rather contribute to building something better for all future generations
