However, this time period also saw great changes in SantaMaria with new developments such as the opening of a movie theater in 1927 which helped spur economic growth around that time period. Today, SantaMaria remains an attractive community with thriving businesses and vibrant cultural events

In 1876, the first school opened in Santa Maria. The town named after the Virgin Mary was platted in 1889. The population of Santa Maria grew rapidly over the next few years due to new arrivals and expanding agriculture. The first recorded fire in the town occurred on November 9, 1886 when a farmhouse caught fire. By 1890, there were three churches and over 100 residents living inSantaMaria. On October 5, 1896, Mexican immigrants Cecilia Vargas and her husband José Vargas arrived at Ellis Island with their four children and took up residence inSantaMaria. They would later become residents of Los Angeles County where they raised two more children before passing away in 2006. On January 17, 1907 local voters ratified a referendum approving incorporation into the City of Los Angeles On March 3 1912 an election was held to approve annexation by Los Angeles County of all unincorporated areas east of San Fernando Road including Santa Maria which voted overwhelmingly for annexation The population of Santa Maria exploded following annexation with over 1,500 people moving to southeastern Los Angeles County within five years
