Santa Maria, California is a small town located in the north-central Antelope Valley of San Diego County, California. The population was 9,202 as of 2000. The name Santa Maria comes from the Spanish word Santamaría meaning "Saint Martha's Mount." The mount is located on the east side of the town and overlooks downtown. The first people to live in what is now Santa Maria were Ohlone Indians who came down from the hills above central San Diego County about 12,000 years ago. In 1824, Mexico won their war with United States over land grants and began developing this area as part of its new Mexican Empire. A rancho was granted to José Joaquín de Urquiza by Governor Manuel Micheltorena on November 8, 1826. In 1842 John Cahuilla founded an agricultural mission called Rancho Chapultepec at what is now Chula Vista Boulevard in southeastern SantaMaria Township (now part of Covina). He named his Rancho after Saint Catherine of Sienna whose feast day was February 14th that year. After several years he withdrew his colonists because they lacked equipment to make a successful settlement so he sold some rights back to Urquiza for $1,000 on October 6, 1845. This episode marks one point during which ranchers had exclusive access to land within Mexican territory south of Yuma City boundary under various agreements made with Mexico between 1840-1848 inclusive He next leased 4,500 acres (2 km²) adjacent to Rancho Chapultepec from José Joaquin De Urquiza for $5 per acre ($20 per hectare) payable annually until paid off plus interest This parcel became known as Rancho Rinconada which later included most of eastern SantaMaria Township . On January 1st 1860 James Wickersham bought 100 acres (40 ha), east/southeast corner lot #6 in Rinconada for $8 per acre ($32 per hectare). Santa Maria, California was founded on January 24, 1800 by Spanish expedition under Captain José Joaquín de Urquiza. The first post office in the mission town was established on February 17, 1800. By 1821, Santa Maria had a population of over 100 people. In 1849, the Mexican government authorized an exchange of land between San Francisco and Monterey for the purpose of forming a new county in Alta California. On December 6, 1850, part of Rancho Rinconada was sold to Nicholas Doherty and James Fenton for $5200 In 1852-1853 San Francisco filled up its jails with native Californians arrested as criminals or smugglers seeking passage to Oregon or other western destinations via Mexico. This created great public resentment against the British who were responsible for filling up our jails with innocent natives. A petition calling for the release of these prisoners was circulated throughout the Mission District and soon enough news began to spread through English-speaking residents of what had been happening. A meeting was called on November 16th of that year to consider how best to deal with this situation but no action was taken until December 3rd when a letter from Governor Manuel Micheltorena arrived in town demanding that all noncitizens be released within 24 hours or face consequences including possible expulsion from Mission Bay On December 4th Doherty announced his intention to send one wagonload per day by sea freight directly from Monterey Jail's stockpile of goods (including food) to Santa Maria as an reparation for wrongs done by British authorities during their occupancy of our town
