Santa Maria, California is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The name "Santa Maria" is Spanish for "Saint Mary." The city was founded in 1851 by entrepreneurs Pedro Cenoble and José Ortega as a mission to serve the Mexican community who had settled around San Joaquin County. The original site of the present-day Santa Maria Mission was near what is now downtown Santa Maria. In 1853, Father Francisco Sanchez built a small chapel on an hill in central Santa Maria to house the parish's priests and religious brethren. On December 12, 1854, Father Sanchez served as the first bishop of Alta California and appointed Don Vicente Martinez to succeed him as bishop of SantaMaria. In 1856, under Bishop Martinez's leadership, the first school building was erected in SantaMaria; it became known as la Asuncion (the Assumption). That year also saw the founding of other churches in central SantaMaria: Immaculate Conception (1857), Nuestra Señora de los Dolores (1859), San Juan Bautista (1860), and Santiago de Compostela (1861). In 1865, when Bishop Martinez retired due to age or illness, he bequeathed his entire episcopal domain toSantaMaria Cathedral with instructions that it should be used for religious education only; however, this rule did not apply universally throughout southern California because some bishops continued to use their own domains for secular purposes such as high schools and markets. In 1870 Diego Ortiz began construction on what would become Chavez Ravine Chapel which stands today on part of what once were streets leading south from Main Street into downtown Santa Maria. This chapelolerated services until 1893 whenFather Antonio Gomez replaced Father Ortiz as pastorofSt Joseph's Parish following a popular uprising against Gomez led by cleric Juanito Moreno y Vargas which started on November 29th,. After three years of peaceful protests by locals against Moreno y Vargas' autocratic rule over their parish they finally forced him out onto Main Street whereupon he installed two clerks instead of one ordained priest so that church services could take place without disturbance and eventually expelled all clerics associated with Gomez from their parishes including Father Antonio Gomez himself. From then until his death in 1907 there followed several brief periods during which no priest served at St Joseph’s due either to transfer or retirement reasons.; however despite these disruptions things went back to normal soon enough The late nineteenth century also saw increased efforts by Catholics outside of southern Californiato establish missions within their jurisdiction such as those operating outposts at Placerville (in Northern Nevada) or Sonoma County (in Northern Marin). However everything came to an end with Mexico repudiating American independence in 1898 A few months later Buena Vista Station closed its doors afterMexican troops burned down most its buildings . Although many private Catholic institutions reopened shortly afterwardsBuena Vista Station remains one of history's last remaining military posts west Of Mexico City

The town grew rapidly because of its location near the newly completed Railroad to San Francisco and its proximity to gold mines. Santa Maria became a thriving city by 1850 with over 100 residents. By 1870, the population had reached 1,500 and it boasted a steam-powered cotton gin, flour mill, sawmill, grist mill and shoe factory. The early 20th century saw growth in agriculture as well as ranching and manufacturing in Santa Maria. In 1916, Santa Maria became an incorporated city with a population of over 10,000. It experienced rapid growth during World War II with the erection of four military airfields in the area; one forAAF bombers (now known as Luke Air Force Base), two for Army artillery units (today’s San Luis Obispo County Airport), and a fourth for naval aviation (now Naval Station Ventura County). During the 1960s and 1970s there was significant change take place in SantaMaria when several large companies moved their operations from downtown to new suburbs like Rancho Mirage or Thousand Oaks. However today many notable agencies continue to reside within walking distance including: City Hall; Helendale Elementary School; Holy Name Catholic Church; Applebees restaurant & bar; Stinson Beach Aquarium; Parkside Pharmacy - adjacent to City Hall - which has been serving SantaMaria's community since 1907!
