The name was changed to "Santa Fe Springs" in 1848 when two Dutch families moved into town from Anaheim and started an agricultural business called "Netherlandsia". In 1860, American Charles Manson and his cult members committed multiple murders at Chatsworth Asylum for Women near Redlands in Southern California before setting off for Northern California. They targeted women because they believed that they had spiritual powers that could help them resist evil spirits or get relief from pain or suffering. One woman survived:Susan Atkins after being able to contact God through her menstrual cramps while living under the watchful eye of Manson's followers. In 1969 Los Angeles police officer Jody Unruh killed six people inside Pan Am Flight 103 over Scotland before crashing into Larkfield Hills outside Beverly Hills; this event became known as "the Skies Above Satan." In 1984 John Hinckley Jr.,CEO and President Reagan's personal security guard shot then-President Reagan with a .22 caliber rifle from behind within 100 feet of him while he attended a political rally at Dallas' Love Field airport; this event became known as “the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan” or “Dennis Rodman Day”. A $1 million dollar grant was presented by Governor Pete Wilson to Santa Fe Springs Town Center Incorporated in 1985 for its redevelopment project which included creating new parks, cultural venues and businesses around town square downtown including an arts center, open space park and five new housing units developmentsPhase IA still awaits final approvals by City Council but has been renamed pedestrian plaza which will feature public art gardens & large outdoor amphitheater/concert venue Phase II has already kicked off with music festival scheduled for May 6th - 10th 2019!
