In 1906, rancho Niguel was sold to developer Henry Ford and his family for $3 million In 1916, Mr. Ford decided to move his manufacturing operations from Detroit to SantaFe Springs because he felt that new technology would make possible a heavy industry presence hereabouts; however, it didn't happen this way and today we still have only light manufacturing operations Mr. Ford's daughter Clara also came to live here with her family after she married John Ladd who had worked for him at their father's company when they were both kids Clara started working at their father's company until she retired in 1961 They raised two daughters (Linda and Lynne) here before Linda died suddenly while pregnant with their third child Lynnne ; they then moved back into Detroit where Linda continued working until her death there in 1992 The city of Rancho Niguel changed hands multiple times during its history due to economic problems; however, all attempts ended up failing Finally on November 10th, 2000 by virtue of Proposition 209 ( Measure O), which gave authority under state law to mayors/councils over property values within their borders (i.e., no longer could developers annex properties without voter approval), ranchero Miguel Sanchez ceded control over about 640 acres including much of what is now downtown SantaFeSprings back to the City Council effective January 1st 2001 through December 31st 2001 On February 14th 2002 Mayor Jerry Brown announced that he would not seek re-election due to health reasons but upon his death on March 15th2002 Vice Presidential candidate Al Gore announced he would run against Brown if elected Governor resulting in a tie between Mrs. Gore and Mr’Guess who won with less than 50% of the vote
