The first European Americans to live in Santa Fe Springs were prospectors who came into the area during the Gold Rush period (1848-1853). In 1868, two brothers named George Washington Hill and James Irvine arrived from New York City with their families and founded what would later become known as Irvine Elementary School and Santa Fe Springs High School. In 1870, John Caughey opened a grocery store in what would become known as North Park which served as the nucleus of today's downtown business district. Santa Fe Springs became an incorporated town on December 3, 1914 following passage of a state law allowing for incorporation by referendum over local opposition. The new town charter prohibited liquor sales within its boundaries so it quickly became an enclave for wine country residents living east of Riverside Boulevard. On October 2, 1928 when Route 66 entered through present-day downtown SantaFeSprings as well as portions of neighboringIRvine and Monterrey Counties traveling north on I-10 from east to west, Route 66 called itself "The Main Street Corridor" running through DowntownSantaFeSprings only before terminating near Mission Hills Parkway just east of Interstate 5 about 7 miles south of downtownLos Angeles becoming one continuous arterial roadway with no intervening streets orresidential districts
