The first European to visit Santa Fe Springs was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 2, 1542 when he and his party anchored off the coast of California and explored what is now southern Orange County. On December 7, 1871 Jethro Tull observed "a most beautiful spring in a strong natural line" north of present-day Main Street; this observation led him to name the spot "Santa Fe Springs". In 1886, early resident John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort near present-day Main Street and Spring Canyon Road. He named it after his father General James Sutter who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican–American War before coming to California in 1847 as part of the US Army under General John Coyle. There were only six families living here at that time: five from Southern California and one from Nevada (excluding Spanish speaking Mission Indians). By 1890 there were over 100 people living here including some 30 farmers, many employed by Sutter himself as labourers on his new gold mine at Fillmore City outside Of Pasadena. Sutter's Fort served as a military outpost for years until it was finally abandoned by our troops in 1893 when they withdrew from Orange County due to budget cuts within our army bureaucracy at that time. In 1910 local citizens erected a large wooden structure known as The Fort which still stands today across from Spring Canyon Drive adjacent to charming Park Boulevard golf course just south of I-10/Pasadena Freeway ( exit 20) providing much needed shade on hot days while also serving as an excellent public library for residents during those early days before books were brought into town courtesy of horse drawn wagons pulled by livery horses! Heinrich Böll also made visits to Santa Fe Springs shortly after its founding with actor/director Carl Laemmle filming scenes for his movie "The Grapes Of Wrath" here between November 3 & 4, 1940 while production was taking place inside Paramount studios lot across Vinegar Hill Road northeast cornerof LaBrea Avenue just eastof Hollywood Blvd! It must have been quite an event seeing so many big names like Marlon Brando and Humphrey Bogart all come through town together on such short notice! Just think how different life would have been if that little towns namesake had not disappeared into history!!!

Nevertheless, some original businesses remain active such as Biltmore Hotel & Casino which has been operated since 1907 by businessman Clarence "Pat" Lynch; former owner of Los Angeles Dodgers player Don Sutton's Sutton Ranch restaurant; and Lourdes Catholic School which serves students from pre-K through eighth grade
