The history of Santa Cruz, California can be traced back to the early 1800s when Spanish settlers founded a small town on the coast of modern-day Santa Cruz County. The town's founder, Antonio Vallejo, named it "Villa de Santa Cruz" in honor of Saint Francis Xavier who had founded a mission in nearby Monterey County some five years earlier. In 1846, the United States acquired Alta California from Mexico and renamed it Santa Cruz County. By 1850, the population of Santa Cruz had grown to over 10,000 people and development began in earnest. In 1853, a wharf was built at Point Conception and soon thereafter large warehouses were constructed to store goods brought by ocean voyageurs. The first post office was established in 1854 and within two years had outgrown its capacity and moved to its present location on First Street. One of the most significant events that took place during this time was the founding of Fort Point San Francisco by Commodore John D'Brayer on May 25th, 1857. This fortifications served as an important staging ground for American expeditions exploring inland areas of California during the Gold Rush period;Specificallyitwasthefirsteverbaseof operations for Ulysses S Grant's Union Army during his celebrated Black Hawk War campaign against Mexican General Pio Pico. SantaCruz grew rapidly due to its strategic location midway between San Francisco and Sacramento while also enjoying excellent harbor facilities which made it an ideal port for exports such as lumber and other maritime products. Maritime activity increased significantly throughout the late 19th century as both America's North Pacific Expeditions (1892-1895) seeking mineral rights in Alaska via Russian possessions along Siberia's East Coast and Japan's Meiji Restoration led to new shipping traffic along Californian coasts including those headed toward Asia through Farallon Island Passage. As another result of these activities, many prominent citizens developed strong ties with their local community including Judge James Wickersham who became president pro tempore of the state senate before being elected lieutenant governor in 1896;Rufus Haines who cofounded Rancho Cordova Adobe & Glass business enterprise;George Hearst whose company purchased large blocks of land near downtown SAN FRANCISCO for use as open space;andFrank Norris who served as mayor from 1907-1909
Santa Cruz County was established on November 6, 1850, in the Mexican land grant of Rancho Santa Cruz. The first post office in Santa Cruz County was opened in 1853. The county was named for Spanish Santa Cruz de la Sierra, which is located on the California coast. On July 1, 1916, Santa Cruz became part of the United States as a result of the Compromise of 1919.
