On July 7, 1850, Governor Pío Pico approved legislation creating the County of Santa Cruz from land that had been ceded by Mexico to the United States for military purposes during the Mexican-American War. The county seat was established atSantaCruz (then called Benicia) on October 1, 1850. The city's growth came about because it soon became one of the most important staging points along both Route 66 and Interstate 5 for goods moving between Los Angeles and other parts of California. Cotton plantations were also located hereabouts; these died out after World War II but remain evidence through their ruins nearby of early American industry hereabouts

A year later, Nathaniel Hawthorne settled at Point Conception near present-day Santa Cruz. In 1846, Ulysses S. Grant established Fort Point at the mouth of Monterey Strait and claimed most of Alta California for the United States. In 1850, Native American leader Manuel Arroyo sold land to United States military forces under General John Custer for $3 million dollars. In 1868, UC Berkeley was founded as a result of a compromise between Mayor George Hearst's campaign promise to create an institutionsulty at Berkeley and Chancellor Leland Stanford's efforts to consolidate all university students into one school system throughout California under one roof. On October 6, 1868, UC Berkeley opened its doors with six undergraduate majors: English; Natural Sciences; Social Science; Music; and Fine Arts (the only university in California to offer these degrees). The University has since grown rapidly with over 100 faculties and departments across eight campuses located in three states: Contra Costa County (in Northern California), Kern County (in Southern California), and Imperial County (in Mexico).
