The population grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s as a result of new irrigation projects and other Means of Transportation such as wagon roads and stagecoach service between Santa Cruz and nearby towns. The discovery of oil in Santa Cruz County in 1901 stimulated growth even further with many local businesses becoming involved in the industry. In 1912, voters passed an act authorizing annexation of Contra Costa County which made Santa Cruz County one of California's twenty-six counties.
