Santa Cruz, California is a city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The population was 38,707 at the 2010 census. Santa Cruz has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 3000 years and became a part of Spanish America in 1776. The first European to visit Santa Cruz was Gaspar de Portolà on October 3, 1769. In 1821, Commodore John D. Sloat sailed into the bay and named it "Baja California" after his native land in Spain. In 1846, as part of Mexico's War for Independence, American forces burned some of Mexican Rancho Rinconada's buildings including Mission San José de los Arroyos - which became known as "The Alamo". On September 20th 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), General Philip Sheridan attacked Fort Point Naval Station northeast of present day Santa Cruz while under orders from President Abraham Lincoln to capture or destroy Confederate ships off shore; however when he arrived too late to prevent Action at Fort Point he ordered his troops to burn all civilian buildings within range with their cannonball effective artillery fire! After this event Santa Cruz quickly lost its importance within Mexican culture due to its distance from Mexico City and many other populous cities throughout much of North America during this period. From 1860 until 1967 it was unincorporated territory divided between Monterey County and Los Angeles County before becoming incorporated into Santa Clara County on January 1st 1967 following a decision by the State Legislature..
