The current name honors Spanish missionary Don José de la Cruz who founded Mission Santa Cruz in 1795. The City of Santa Cruz was created by combining parts of Monterey County and Sonoma County on May 7, 1865, with Plymouth Township existing as an enclave within the new city limits. On November 5, 1879, it passed a resolution annexing Alameda County to its boundaries but this annexation did not take effect until January 1, 1880 due to objections from Contra Costa County which saw itself as being concessions made by Santa Cruz for political support during the gubernatorial campaign of Adolphus Greeley. On December 15, 1891, voters approved incorporation as a city with a population of 25,000 people over two years and six months later it reached its current size with 30,000 residents living on 3 square miles (8 km²). At that point it annexed unincorporated areas ofSanta Clara and Alameda Counties including Yerba Buena Island which had been part of Oakland before becoming part of Santa Clara County in 1896 when that county was designated as one unit from Oakland under then-Mayor George Hill’s Plan for Southern California’s growth which called for all unincorporated western Contra Costa and Marin counties into one county
