In 1851, the first post office in Santa Cruz was established. In 1882, the first railroad was built in Santa Cruz and it became known as the Santa Cruz and San Francisco Railway. In 1906, a devastating earthquake struck Santa Cruz and killed over 100 people. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with the construction of military barracks, an airfield, and other infrastructure. After the war ended, Santa Cruz experienced a period of stagnation until the early 21st century when it began to experience significant growth in both its economy and population.
