One soldier named John Czarnecki decided to stay behind and help build a military fortification on what is now Maryknoll Heights just north of downtown Santa Cruz County. When he finished his work, he walked into town for dinner with some friends and met Mrs. Marilla Vining whose home he soon converted into a hotel calledthe Vedette which still stands today on First Street in downtown Santa Cruz
