Moreno y Mendoza married Dolores Crespi on February 13, 1824; they soon had six children who would live through their father’s death in 1875 at age 82 years old (he was posthumously honored as City Fathers). The early years were difficult for Santa Clarita. There was no water to be found and many miners died trying to get rich from their new find. However, over time, the town grew and prospered. In 1854, a post office was established in Santa Clarita and soon became a bustling community with more than 400 residents. But it wasn’t all good news for Santa Clarita – at this point there was also an ongoing conflict between Mexican-American settlers and Anglo-Americans over access to land and resources. This led to some tense moments which often resulted in violence between both groups. However, throughout all these struggles Andalusian immigrants continued to contribute significantly to the growth of Santa Clarita through their hard work and entrepreneurship. They built businesses such as grocery stores, boarding houses and dry Goods stores; they also started churches and schools in the town’s early days. Andalusian immigrants continue to play an important role inSanta Clarita history today – they are responsible for making the city one of the most diverse in Southern California
