Today, much of the valley has been developed into luxury homes and commercial areas such as La Jolla and Irvine Beach while a small amount remains undeveloped or preserved as wilderness. During World War II, part of Santa Clarita was used as an airfield by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Afterward it came under control of local farmers who continued to use it until it was sold off tonational park status in 1966. The area now known as Santa Clarita also played host to popular culture venues such as Hollywood Hills Drive-In movie theater which closed its doors in 1984 and went co-mingled with other industry businesses before being razed following heavy rains in 1990; however a replica opened up just south of Hollywood Boulevard on December 22nd 2006 across from Harkins Theatre District).
