A year later on December 12th 1934, after many months of deliberation among local business leaders who had followed campaign promises made during their election campaigns, voters approved Resolution No. 608 appointing Earle Wiggin as Mayor with power over all aspects external affairs including planning for future growth within city limits occasioned by increased autos traffic on Oatman Road which led to development around downtown Santa Clarita now known as "Old Town" In 1951 voters passed Proposition 227 making alcoholic beverages sales subject to state & local taxes instead of individual property tax rates; this caused an immediate rush for liquor stores along I-5 between LAWRENCE and SANTA CLARA VALLEY highways leading out into Ventura County where Prohibition ended less than one year later on December 15th 1952 On November 6th 1949 George Ziegler opened his first store selling gasoline & oil products inside what would become known as "Ziegler's Department Store" until he sold it to Mobil Corporation two years later on February 17th 1951 In 1958 Rancho Mirage annexed parts or all of eastern Kern County creating an area larger than any other municipality west Of Pasadena In 1959 Neil Armstrong became first human being ever authorized by NASA to land on another world while orbiting Earth outside our Solar System
