In 1853, Rancho San Antonio de las Flores was founded in the valley by José Vasquez de Coronado and his party. The rancho included a large tract of land that now includes parts of downtown Los Angeles. In 1872, the name of the rancho was changed to Rancho Santa Fe de la Salle after Isidro Francisco Sánchez grantee acquired it from Vasquez de Coronado. After years of growth and development within the valley, a railroad came through it in 1886 and developed it into an important commercial center for Southern California.
