In 1925, oil refineries were built nearby, which led to a rapid growth in the town; by 1940, it had become an important center for production of gasoline and other fuels. At that time, many people also worked at local defense plants near Arroyo Seco Dam. Since World War II, however, most residents have been involved with manufacturing or services related to industry or transportation within the greater Los Angeles area;Santa Clarita has not seen significant economic growth since then. Today's economy depends largely on oil production located nearby at Refinery #1 (formerly Petro-Mex) along I-5 and Arroyo Seco Boulevard; truckloads of goods leave here every day for Southern California during rush hour traffic congestion on I-5 southbound!
The Santa Clarita Valley was once a part of the Angeles National Forest. The area was first settled by the Tongva people in the early 1800s. Over time, various groups moved into and developed this area, including Mexican American settlers, Anglo Americans, and Asians. In 1915, the Santa Clarita Valley Municipal Utility District was created to provide water and sewer services to the town of Santa Clarita and surrounding villages. In 1933, the valley became an unincorporated community when all of its municipal functions were transferred to nearby Chatsworth. In 1957, a dam on the San Gabriel River was built to Power Ranch reservoir. The dam provided power for irrigation and other purposes until it was abandoned in 1978. Today there is only one small remnant of this structure remaining near Roscoe Boulevard on State Route 138 south of Compton
