On July 6th 1853, post office officials designated what is now downtown Santa Clarita as "El Monte". A year later, when Southern Pacific Railroad began construction nearby on May 15th 54', it became apparent that there would be need for an interchange between their tracks and those of Western Union so a depot could be built near where today's Hollywood Boulevard meets La Brea Avenue (now Melrose Avenue). So railway executives decided to move El Monte east one block until they reached Broadway which then crossed avenues #1 & #2 just north of Ventura Boulevard before intersecting with Congress Street just south of Main Street in present day Downtown Santa Clarita. On October 17th 1854 local citizens voted not to annexurban Rancho Adobe into town but did approve annexation of adjacent Springbrook Village although this village never had any residents because it was zoned agricultural goods rather than residential areas In 1859 Patrick Hickey opened his store at 707 E Broadwayroxplained as being one of pioneer stores along La Brea Ave fronting Broadway both beforeowntown development started and during its early years after buildings Lots 2 thru 5 were developed .
