Santa Clarita, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 112,591 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles after L.A. Santa Clarita has been called "the Gateway to the West" for its close proximity to both Southern and Western Canada and its rich cultural history dating back to European settlement of this region during the 18th century. The name "Santa Clarita" is derived from Spanish words meaning "holy place." In 1907, local prospector Henny Youngblood found silver on what would become known as Old Santa Clarita Ranch and named his discovery Santa claritas (Spanish for 'gleaming waters'). This early name is still used today and can be seen on various buildings in town including the old High School building which was built in 1915 and still remains standing; also on Main Street near where Interstate 5 meets State Route 91 are several small businesses with brochures dated 1907 such as Jardin Botanique (a botanical garden), La Bodega Mexicana (a Mexican restaurant), Donner House Hotel and Casino, Playland Park Racetrack, etc.; these were all part of what is now downtown Santa Clarita when it was first developed. In 1922, Harry Chandler opened Chandler's Department store in what later became known as Downtown Santa Clarita. The store was one of many successful businesses started by Harry Chandler throughout his career including: a grocery store at 711 North First Street which he operated from 1928 until 1972; an auto dealership at 919 East Second Street from 1948 until his death in 1984; three movie theaters - El Rey Theatre at 805 North Beverly Boulevard from 1951 until 1966; and finally a theme park - America's Wonderland at 6455 Lankershim Freeway from 1973 until 1982 which closed due to financial problems but reopened under new management less than two years later as Disneyland Las Vegas with similar attractions). On October 15, 1923 Ivar Nilsen married Agnes Christensen here followed by their first child Julie Anna Nilsen on December 12 of that year. On November 14 of 1924 they had their second children Paloma Isabel Nilsen born just north of downtown Santa Clarita while they were living at 5200 Lankershim Boulevard; however Paloma died shortly thereafter due to cerebral hemorrhage following childbirth thus ending any hopes that she might have been featured prominently in futureNamsens campaigns marketing materials

The name "Santa Clarita" was first given to the town after a Mrs. Kappell told Father Byrne that she saw a white sleigh coming down the street from Ireland, and she thought it must be Santa Claus because of its loud noise. The first store in Santa Clarita opened on November 25, 1888 and operated under the name of Donner's Grocery Store. In 1893, Laughlin's Hardware Store was founded and continued to operate until it closed in 1922. On December 6, 1907, the town renamed itself Santa Clarita after Rear Admiral John Dimmick who had attended an assembly held at Stations Church which called for development around Los Angeles Harbor including Santa Clarita Bay. In 1920, Alameda Boulevard was completed as part of Interstate 5 which bypassed Santa Clarita Valley and replaced several old roads connecting Los Angeles with other parts of Southern California
