The first post office opened in 1879 and was known as Herculesville because of its high mountain topography. In 1886 local citizens formed the Santa Clara Valley Railroad Company to promote settlement along what would become Route 66 which ran through their town center. By 1912 there were over 100 businesses downtown with one hundred housing units built on various sites throughout the ensuing years. The growth of nearby Livermore led to an exodus of residents during World War II when munitions production took precedence over agriculture or other economic activities that could have supported civilian populations living near military installations such as Livermore Army Airfield A campaign spearheaded by City Councilman Gordon Smith called "Operation Homecoming" helped bring back nearly 6,000 displaced locals including many women and children during 1944-1945 when Leverone airbase closed following the war's end The closure left many people out of work and led to increased crime rates which continues today despite efforts by police chiefs and community groups to address these issues
