Many of these settlers came from eastern Massachusetts, New York City and other parts of New England via boat or land transportation. The city has experienced many changes over its history including being called "the most crowded city on earth" during the 1920s because of its large population growth due to World War I Veterans returning home from Europe; becoming a bedroom community for Oakland; experiencing rapid growth following World War II when Bay Area employers relocated there following advances in technology;and declining status after special districts were created within Alameda County to handle growth more efficiently than through individual cities or counties. However, recent redevelopment efforts have led to new life for downtown Santa Clara with new restaurants, offices and homes opening up along Market Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets near Interstate 80.
The first European to see Santa Clara was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on September 2, 1542. He sighted the coast of Santa Clara County from a sailing vessel he had been exploring in the Pacific Ocean. A few days later, on September 5, he landed on shore and erected a small log cabin near what is now downtown Santa Clara. The landing site is still visible today as part of the boundaries of downtown Santa Clara. On October 6, 1846, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in San Francisco Bay by James W. Hahn and George C. Brown. The discovery madeSanta Clara an important commercial center andrewnded increased development around it including the founding of local schools and churches such as Grace Church and Cathedral de la Real Sociedad (later known as Regency Park). In 1868, American Civil War veteran Manuel Nieto organized a group called "Nieto's Battalion" to resist Mexican forces who were occupying California during the war. The battalion became known as "the Nisei Battalion." In 1876, Nieto founded the Alumnae Club which still exists today as one of Santa Clara's most popular organizations. Italo-American Chautauqua Association visited Santa Clara in 1909 and 1910; this event is generally considered to be when modern day Christmas began in California
