The history of scopes in Santa Clara County, California can be traced back to 1847 when a group of men led by Reverend George B. Smith set up a telescope on the hill overlooking town. In 1867, Captain David Starr Jordan established what is now Caltech as one of only two American institutions granting degrees in Astronomy and Astrophysics (the other being MIT). Shortly thereafter, he began using his new facility for observing objects beyond our Solar System... including Mars! During World War II, Santa Clara County played host to numerous military airfields used for target practice and deployments over Japan; someofthe largest were located just outside town limits near Sand Point Naval Air Station. At least one large telescope was brought into service during these wartime operations: The 7-meter reflector Telescope No. 2 at Moffett Field; it operated from 1945 until 1948 when it was replaced by another large mirror telescope (7-meter Telescope No. 3) which still operates today at UC Berkeley’s La Silla Observatory..observing celestial objects with great detail down to around 100 kilometers away! In 1949–1950—during the height of Communist control over China—Santa Clara County became an important center for research into stellar astrophysics using Very Long Baseline Array/Very Wide Baseline Array technology which allowed astronomers to detect faint sources thousands of times further away than ever before! These instruments continue operate today with various names such as “ataka” (Eritrea), “yurek”(Rumania), “chinajeffrey”(Japan), etc., providing us with invaluable data about galaxies far beyond our own Milky Way Galaxy!
