On May 1st 2006 local residents successfully petitioned to annex part of unincorporated Palo Alto which straddles the border between Palo Alto andSanta Clara Counties into their municipality for both economic and political reasons[8][9]. As a result of this annexation all residents within one municipality now have voting rights on matters related to that municipality including zoning decisions as well as public school education and public safety issues.

This period saw major transformation within the cityscape with the installation of high-rise buildings such as The Gough Building (1948), North Beach Towers (1957), and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel (1968). Today, Santa Clara is home to an impressive number of cultural institutions including UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business; Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business; City College; San Jose State University; among others. Additionally, it has become an important economic center with businesses headquartered in both downtown Santa Clara and suburban neighborhoods such as Willow Glen or Menlo Park.
In 1847, the first permanent settlers in what is now Santa Clara County were Spanish Missionaries. The area was part of Alta California Province until 1848 when it became part of Mexican territory. Santa Clara County was created on February 6, 1850 from parts of San Francisco and Monterey counties. The county seat was moved to San Jose in 1856.
